After 5 years of washing my own children's cloth diapers, and providing cloth diapers to folks around the world, I have moved into the next logical stage of my business - providing a cloth diapering service for parents in Eastern Iowa. Convenience A cotton diaper isn't just a diaper. It's a burp shield for a parent's shoulder, a wash cloth, a light sheet in summer for an infant, a cushion under a baby on a rug or in a crib, a sunshade, a bib, a changing pad, a hand towel, and lots of other things that will give you nice memories of your child's babyhood.
First off - a bit of perspective on diapering:
When you're a first-time expectant parent, especially an expectant father, the thought of diapers tends to conjure up some pretty yucky imagery. The actual diaper experience, though, isn't nearly so bad.
Healthy urine is sterile, as long as your baby doesn't have to wear a urinated-in diaper for very long, so changing a wet diaper is no more unpleasant than discarding a wet towel.
As for that other output, yes, there are some epic messes once in a while. They are just as epic, by the way, whether the diaper is cotton or disposable, because while the "disposable" tag implies you get rid of the yuck at arm's length with the dirty diaper, the baby's skin in the early days usually has at least as much yuck as the diaper itself. Nothing short of a diaper that vacuums your baby's bottom will ever change that. So, since the epic doesn't happen all that often, relax and enjoy the diapering years, which we guarantee you will pass all too quickly, especially if you use cotton diapers.
There are many reasons to choose cloth over disposables - and each parent will be driven by their own priorities. My primary motivator was saving the family budget and providing a healthier alternative for my baby.
What will motivate you?
Cotton is more comfortable
and breathes unlike disposable diapers, reducing bacteria and heat build-up, as well as the possibility of diaper rash. The breathability of cotton ventilates the skin and helps evaporate the potentially irritating ammonia that starts to form as soon as a baby wets. Which would you rather wear?
No Chemicals, Dioxins, or Toxins
like those found in disposables - and not even any detergent residue in our diapers! The polyacrylate gel in diapers leaches moisture from your babies skin, and is suspected of exacerbating or even causing asthma.
Decreased water and energy usage
It takes less water to launder cloth diapers than it does to manufacture disposable diapers. We also reduce our energy consumption by line-drying diapers before giving them a brief fluffing tumble in the dryer.
Potty Training is done earlier
Cloth diapers have a clear advantage over single-use diapers when it comes to toilet training. Babies diapered with cloth tend to toilet train more quickly because they know when they are wet. With the advent of single-use pull-ups, it's not uncommon to see four- and five-year-old children who still aren't completely potty trained.
Using a service provides you with the freedom of having diapers delivered to your door. Plus - your service is personalized. The diapers you send home with us are the very same diapers you will get back the following week. Your diapers are always wash by themselves (never with other families’ diapers).
More money in your pocket
Diaper services are far less expensive than disposables, especially if you have more than one child in diapers. You can see for yourself with the cost analysis provided here.
A risk-free way to try cloth diapering
The beauty of this diaper service is the chance to “try before you buy”. Once you experience how easy it is to use cloth diapers, you can move into washing your own, if you choose!
Ease of use
Diapers have evolved into virtual replicas of the disposable version we are all accustom with, thus making it pain-free to make the switch to cloth! NO PINS NECESSARY!
Better for our ground water
We use oxygen, peroxide, and silver ions in our hospital-grade washing system - eliminating all soiling, odors, bacteria, and viruses without adding any detergents - making our diapers absolutely sterile, as well as our rinse water 100% natural and without impact on the environment.
Reduced Landfill waste
Disposable diapers are the 3rd largest source of consumer landfill waste in the USA. Disposables leave behind 2.7 tons of non-biodegradable waste per child, often loaded with raw sewage that can leach into groundwater.
Save the trees
It takes 20-40 trees to diaper a child in disposables.
And, the Other Thing
(Far More Important Than You Can Imagine!)
